Meet Our Conductors
Johannes Eberhart
Conductor
Johannes is a third-year Violin Performance and Music Education double major at UCLA. He studies violin with Varty Manouelian and Movses Pogossian, as well as viola with Brian Chen. Outside of UCLA, Johannes is also a violinist in California Young Artists Symphony and has played with LA Camerata. Additionally, he is an active teacher and is president of the UCLA ASTA Chapter. As a conductor, Johannes has shared the stage with members of the LA Phil at a Dilijan Chamber Music Series concert, collaborated with the UCLA Saxophone Studio, and put on chamber orchestra music recitals. This is his first year conducting CBSO, and he is so happy to work with everyone.
Nathan Ng
Assistant Conductor
Nathan is a second-year Biology major and former ethnomusicology major. He is passionate about conducting, led rehearsals in his high school orchestra, and previously served as concertmaster and principal violist. He has performed on the violin with the California Orchestra Directors Association Honors String Orchestra in San Diego, under the baton of Dr. Alexander Kahn; the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra; the Diablo Symphony Orchestra; two-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Mads Tolling, and the UCLA Symphony Orchestra.
History of CBSO
CBSO is UCLA’s first and only student-led orchestra. With its mission of making orchestral playing accessible to all students, CBSO draws string musicians from all majors at UCLA, including both undergraduate and graduate students. Since its inception in 2021, CBSO has grown from a 15-member string ensemble to a flourishing orchestra now 70 members strong. CBSO’s diverse repertoire encompasses a wide range of classical, modern, and student-composed pieces. The orchestra performs twice a year, and has consistently sold out UCLA’s Mira Hershey Hall.
In 2023, CBSO initiated music outreach programs, giving members the opportunity to share the joy of music with young children and perform chamber music at local schools such as the UCLA Lab School. Through outreach, CBSO hopes to spread music education to elementary schools and inspire the next generation of musicians.
